The most popular local specialties are 'Casado', a dish of rice, beans, plantain, meat and salad;'Chorreadas', thick corn tortillas; and 'Empanadas', traditional pastries filled with cheese, beans or meat.

Other very popular dishes in the region are Tamales, Rice with Chicken, 'Picadillo de Arracache' (minced arracache root with pork or veal) and 'Papa con Carne' (meat and potato stew).

If Costa Rica is a gorgeous country, its handicrafts are no less attractive. Objects created from precious woods, the roots of the coffee bush, banana paper, clay and gold, and utensils made from smelted iron and other materials, are all meticulously worked by skillful local craftspeople.
