    Local Attractions
    Dominican Republic North Coast

    GRI-GRI LAGOON

The small village of Rio San Juan lies just five minutes from the Caribbean Village Playa Grande and about an hour from Puerto Plata.  From here guests can take a beautiful boat ride across the Gri-Gri Lagoon and observe the flora and fauna of the mangrove swamps and see egrets nesting. Next it's on to the Atlantic Ocean for a ride along the coast. Guests can greet local fishermen as they make their way to the cave of the swallows.

MOUNT ISABEL DE TORRES & CABLE CAR

Watching over the city of San Felipe de Puerto Plata is Mount Isabel de Torres. Named by Christopher Columbus in honor of his patron Queen Isabel La Catolica of Spain, Isabel de Torres towers 2,565 feet above sea level and serves as the backdrop for Puerto Plata’s seaside beauty.

The mountain top is reached by cable car which operates daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. A short   seven minute ride takes sightseers up to seven square miles of manicured gardens and to the most spectacular view of the north coast.

    LA ISABELA AND LUPERON

The remains of the first permanent settlement in the New World lie an hour ride from Puerto Plata. On his second trip, to what he died believing were the East Indies, Columbus founded La Villa de La Isabela. La Isabela was inhabited for about four years until it was moved to the east bank of the Rio Ozama opposite what is today Santo Domingo de Guzman, the Dominican Republic's capital city and the oldest continually inhabited city in the New World.

History and archaeology enthusiasts can observe the foundations of many of the original buildings as well as an open tomb of a pre-Colombian Indian. A beautiful countryside road trip compliments the excursion.

    TOBACCO PLANTATIONS & CIGAR FACTORIES

An hour drive toward the south, over the northern mountain range with its breathtaking views, is the Valle del Cibao, the Dominican Republic’s breadbasket central valley.  Some of the world’s most sought-after tobacco leaves, grown in large fields around drying sheds, can be found on the foothills of the surrounding mountains.
Also in the area are some of the world’s foremost cigar manufacturing companies.  Guests can visit these factories and take a full tour of the process that takes the raw tobacco and converts it into a fine cigar.

    SAMANA & CAYO LEVANTADO

Situated two hours away from the Caribbean Village Playa Grande, the area of Samana and the island of Cayo Levantado are home to some of the Caribbean's most famous and magnificent beaches. On the way to the bay of Samana, guests can have an unforgettable experience traveling  through fields of rice, coconut and coffee and traveling by cacao plantations. Once guests arrive in Samana, they board a boat headed for Bacardi Isle or Cayo Levantado, a tropical island paradise made famous for its image in the Barcardi rum advertisements.

During the winter months, guests have the option of participating in a whale-watching excursion in the Samana bay. One of the largest populations of humpback whales gather off this coast to mate each year.

    PUEBLO BAHIA PRINCIPE

The nearby village of Bahia Principe offers guests a variety of stores, bars, restaurants, discos, casinos and gift shops selling folklore art.

    SAN FELIPE DE PUERTO PLATA

San Felipe de Puerto Plata, as the city was baptized by Nicolas de Ovando in 1502, was founded by order of the Spanish Crown to protect the northern coast of the colony of La Española or La Hispaniola. It is said that the shimmering sunlight on the bay’s waters gave the city its name of the Silver Coast.

Today Puerto Plata, as it is more commonly known, is home to a bustling tourist industry. The city manages to retain its Caribbean flavor with one of the world’s largest collection of Victorian Gingerbread architecture, the Fortaleza San Felipe, which still guards the entrance to the city’s port, the Brugal Rum Distillery, and the world’s largest collection of fossil-bearing amber at the Amber Museum.
